Strawberries and cream anyone? Wimbledon comes to YouTube
Tennis fans, this one’s for you. Wimbledon is coming to YouTube.
The video-sharing network has announced that you’ll be able to catch key moments of the tennis, interviews, behind the scenes and press conferences throughout the Wimbledon fortnight on the official Wimbledon channel.
The renowned tournament, which kicks off today, is in its 127th running and will see Roger Federer defending a title which he has won on seven previous occasions.
As well as the footage from the current tournament, YouTube says you’ll also be able “relive all the glory days of Wimbledon’s golden moments”, such as one of the greatest matches ever played, the 2008 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final: Rafael Nadal vs. Roger Federer.
If you want to get into the spirit of the tournament, YouTube also recommends this video by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, showing you how to make strawberry ice cream:
You can also apparently win Centre Court tickets by posting a Wimbledon-inspired #shotoftheday photo on the tournament’s Google+ page.
This is not the first time YouTube has partnered with a major sporting event. In 2012 for instance, it provided live coverage of the Olympics to a number of African and Asian countries.
What’s unclear at this point, is what the reaction will be when there are enough internet-enabled TVs for YouTube to become a serious threat to traditional sports broadcasters.
