Today is Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday and in honour of the 67 years the globally renowned statesman spent in public service, people around the world will be committing to spend at least 67 minutes making the world a better place.
The practice of giving 67 minutes of your time to public service in honour of the former South African president, affectionately known as Madiba, has been around for a little while now. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010. However, other groups began celebrating Mandela Day on 18 July 2009.
This year’s Mandela Day is particularly poignant, with the global icon having spent more than a month in hospital receiving treatment for a recurring lung infection.
