I’ve noticed that people in the digital marketing space are always debating the following: What is the best social media channel? How can I start getting all the big wins everyone is talking about regarding social media? Should we focus more on SEO, paid advertising or social media marketing? How many times should we publish new blog posts and social media updates? What is the best online reputation management tool available? How long will it take to be successful with my online strategy?

Are these questions really that important? In my experience, if you are a digital marketer, the answer is yes. However, way too much time and effort is spent finding the answers to those questions. Focusing only on those questions will eat up your time, but in the end you need clients and that is all that you should worry about. That is the bottom line of marketing. Are we missing the whole point with marketing by not focusing on the right things?

We are living in an interconnected world and business is moving at a more accelerated pace than every before, but way too many people are getting lazy about how we structure our days to be more productive. When last did you walk into a coffee shop where no one was interacting with some kind of technology? Difficult to remember.

It’s a reality. People find comfort online. Whether it’s to socialise with friends on their favourite social media channel, streaming music and videos anywhere there’s a connection or searching for the nearest coffee shop. It’s now a connected world we are living in and it’s getting more difficult by the day for digital marketers to interact with these people.

Instead of focusing all your effort on looking at the best platform to use or how many Twitter followers and Facebook Likes your brand should get, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Who is going to be our next client?
  • How can we find more clients?
  • How can I serve my clients better right at this moment?
  • Why isn’t the phone ringing more?

Traditional marketing, digital marketing, social media, client service, training, production, and communication should work together and the whole process of getting new ideas that you can implement needs to happen faster. Your clients are in control and it’s up to your whole business including marketers, IT, support, production, and client service to work together to insure the needs of your clients are met.

The days are long gone where you can target your audience with one way broadcasting methods. Serve them on their terms and when they want to interact with you. It will pay back.
Focusing on servicing your clients right now. You need to update your processes and implement new ways to insure your customers have access to the right kind of information so that they can make decisions on their own time. The world wide web has changed the way business is conducted. Take advantage of this and start focusing on your clients and stop worrying about the next big platform to create an account on.
