Google Indoor Maps now in SA
South African Google Maps can now get directions for select indoor locations.
The indoor areas that have been selected to be mapped by Google’s mapping service include airports, shopping centres, casinos, convention halls and universities in South Africa
.
This is especially useful if you’re one of those people who finds that shops suddenly go missing at the mall or if you’re looking for that Gautrain terminal whose position is a mystery to everyone.
Users can also access Google Maps features such as ‘Where am I’ and ‘What’s around me’ when walking indoors.
Google Maps is already good at showing people where they are and where they need to go and how long it will take them to get there. It also allows one to explore neighbourhoods with its street level imagery.
“Today, we’re taking Google Maps in South Africa to another level: we’re delighted to announce that we’re now able to show indoor maps for a number of locations,” the company said in a press release.

Google says it’s teamed up with over 30 groups for the initial rollout, including Airports Company SA, Gautrain, Tsogo and Growthpoint/Hypeprop Mall Properties.
On the initial roll out, venues mapped include Cape Town International Airport, OR Tambo International Airport, King Shaka International Airport, various Gautrain stations, Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village, Constantia Village, the V&A Waterfront, Hyde Park Corner, Montecasino, Gold Reef Casino, Durban Convention Centre, the Coca Cola Dome and Wits University.
Depending on the data that has been loaded with the indoor map, the map will show notable places in the building a use is currently viewing, including stores, restrooms, restaurants, and more. Touch any indoor location to learn more.
To view indoor maps, zoom into the venues in question using Google Maps, and their floor plans should pop up.
Though the feature is available to limited locations, Google also encourages building owners to upload their own building maps onto Google Maps.
