Google Street View catches South African robbery in progress
We’ve seen a lot of weird and wonderful things hidden inside Google’s Street View. From the highest mountain peaks to Robben Island and now a couple of guys holding a security guard up at gunpoint in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The images, taken in February 2015 in Junction Road, are of two men pointing a gun at an ADT private security guard, in plain sight of the Google Street View car driving past.
Following the Street View car, one can see a white BMW pulling up behind the private security car. The two armed men then ran up to the passenger seat of the ADT car. Guns drawn, they then escorted him from his vehicle.
Speaking to The Independent, Theunis Kotze, general manager of ADT’s Inland Region, said “the South African Police Services (SAPS), along with ADT, investigated the incident but no arrests were made at the time.”
He hopes the attention these images have received online will encourage the investigation to move forward:
The Google Street View pictures recently shared on social media and brought to the attention of ADT could possibly assist in furthering the investigation and will be looked into by SAPS and ADT.
The most ironic thing of this entire fiasco? Right across the street — which is plastered with ADT sign boards, mind — sits what looks like another security guard, completely unaware of what’s taking place just outside his booth.
