All-Madrid Champions League final draws 27m interactions on Facebook

The UEFA Champions league final was arguably the biggest sporting event on earth on Saturday, and definitely on Facebook too. The football match saw Real Madrid emerge as the winner, beating Atlético Madrid as they did in 2014, to win its 11th European Cup in Milan, Italy.

According to Facebook, the match saw 27-million interactions across the globe with 1.4-million interactions in Spain alone.

The most number of conversations came from Brazil with 2.9-million users driving 6.8-million interactions, followed by Mexico with 2.7-million users driving 7.5 million interactions, and third most interactions came from Indonesia with 5.3-million driven by 1.9-million users.

Spain saw 3.5-million Facebook interactions, and finally the Unites States coming last with 1.2-million people driving 3.2-million interactions. Those US numbers also shows a growth for football in this region.

The top moments, suggests Facebook, was Cristiano Ronaldo’s winning penalty for Real Madrid, Sergio Ramos scoring the opening and only goal for Real Madrid, the equalising goal scored by Yannick Carrasco, and the end of the 2nd half of extra time, which meant the match had to be settled in penalties.

Ronaldo was the most talked about player and a picture of him kissing the cup has been liked 4.1-million times with close to 156 000 shares and 64 000 comments.
