Tesla misses Q2 2016 delivery targets, global growth increases

Elon Musk’s Tesla isn’t growing as prolifically as some might believe.

Although a pioneering force in the electric and autonomous car industry, the company this weekend announced that it missed its delivery target for the second quarter of 2016.

The company’s own estimate of 17 000 vehicles delivered was missed by just under 3000, with Tesla pushing only 14 370 cars out the door. This still represents a 25% bump in global sales QoQ.

The company also notes that it has produced 20% more cars over the previous quarter — so at least there’s an improvement there. However, it’s also worth mentioning that the Model S and Model X deliveries were lower than the company’s Q1 figures (the former dropping 15%). Whoops.

Nevertheless, Tesla’s states that it’s still looking to produce 50 000 cars in the second half of the year.

Tesla’s also currently embroiled in its first autonomous car-related death. A driver, piloting one of the company’s Autopilot-enabled Model S cars, succumbed to injuries after the car collided with a truck in Florida back in May 2016.

“This is the first known fatality in just over 130 million miles where Autopilot was activated,” Tesla said in a statement.
