Showmax users can now download and stream content for free through one of 83 VAST WiFi hotspots across South Africa, the company today announced.

This comes after a partnership was struck to zero-rate Showmax data on VAST’s networks, set to last for a three-month period.

“Thanks to the downloads feature on Showmax, this zero-rated data means much more than just having something to watch while you’re at the mall,” explains Chris Savides, head of Showmax Africa.

“Once you log onto one of the VAST WiFi sites, download up to 25 TV shows or movies and the data won’t cost you a cent. Get your groceries at the shops and come home with the week’s entertainment sorted.”

Notably, VAST has “almost 30 000” access points across Southern Africa, but only 83 were chosen for this particular partnership.

These hotspots are located primarily in malls, Netcare hospitals and stores like DStv walk-in centres.

Rustenberg, Johannesburg, Tshwane, Durban, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town all feature one or more hotspots.

No data costs will incur when users download or stream Showmax content through select VAST hotspots

“Online video consumption, specifically on mobile devices, is growing rapidly in South Africa. With entertainment being one of the most sought-after content types, we are very excited to play a role in addressing this need and providing consumers with wider access to relevant content,” notes VAST’s CEO Grant Marais.

“Our efforts continue to be aimed at our ambition of democratising internet access and we look forward to supporting Showmax and delivering greater value to the South African market.”

Users connecting to one of the networks listed in the above map through their iOS or Android Showmax app will be eligible for the deal.
