SA’s box office: Black Panther has best Saturday performance of all time

Marvel’s Black Panther is the studio’s biggest opening ever in South Africa, pulling in R16.8-million in its first weekend at the theatres. The film was warmly embraced in places like Bloemfontein, where South African-style celebrations were enjoyed at the opening.

Black Panther — which obviously topped the charts — is now the third biggest industry opening weekend ever in South Africa. The blockbuster also scored the highest Saturday box office of all time with R6.9-million on 17 February.

Black Panther had Marvel’s biggest opening in South Africa, also scoring the highest Saturday box office of all time

The film was also a star in the rest of the continent, and pulled in the biggest industry opening weekend of all time in both East and West Africa.

But Wakanda fun did the other films enjoy this weekend? (16 – 18 February)

Black Panther‘s entrance pushed Fifty Shades Freed and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle down one to second and third respectively. The latter is still the highest life-to-date grosser on R59-million, but Black Panther will likely outdo that number considering Jumanji only made R20-million by its second week.

Animation Tad the Lost Explorer and the Secret of King Midas clung to fourth spot, forcing Maze Runner: The Death Cure down two spots to fifth. It makes sense for Tad to maintain prevalence as the only young kids’ movie currently on the charts.

Afrikaans flick Raaiselkind, about a woman investigated for the murder of her young autistic son, opened in an impressive fifth spot this week, ahead of Gerard Butler’s Den of Thieves, which fell two from fifth to seventh.

Finally, Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World — which gained notice for replacing Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer at the last minute — opened in ninth spot. Its fellow Oscar-nominated film, I, Tonya, failed to grab South Africa’s attention and appear on the charts.
