Apple officially kills iTunes and replaces it with three separate apps

The rumours were true. On Monday Apple confirmed that it will be splitting iTunes into three apps dedicated to music, TV and podcasts for its new desktop operating system MacOS Catalina.

“With MacOS Catalina, Apple is replacing iTunes with its popular entertainment apps — Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and the Apple TV app,” the company revealed at its 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference.

This essentially means that iTunes will become a thing of the past, and users will now have to stream their favourite content via the three different apps on desktop.

On the new Apple Music app, Mac users will be able to stream, download and access their music libraries, which will include previously purchased and downloaded songs.

“For those who like to own their music, the iTunes Music Store is just a click away,” the company noted.

Apple TV will include iTunes movies, Apple TV channels and more that users can rent or purchase.

“The Watch Now section features Up Next, where viewers can keep track of what they are currently watching and resume on any screen,” Apple also said.

Lastly, Apple Podcasts will feature new categories and “advanced search tools that can find episodes by host, guest or even discussion topic”.

MacOS Catalina is expected to launch towards the end of 2019.
