Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are all down again tonight

Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp all experienced connectivity issues on Wednesday night, the former confirmed in a post on Twitter.

Ironically alerting users of its issues on its rival’s platform, Facebook tweeted that it’s “working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible”.

The issues, which began just before 6pm SAST on Wednesday evening, included users unable to upload or send images and files on Facebook’s apps.

The same message was posted to Instagram’s Twitter account.

According to DownDetector, a site that tracks outages online, notes that Instagram users in Europe, the east and west coasts of the United States, and Brazil are widely affected. Users in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, and Spain are also affected by WhatsApp outages.

As of 8.20pm, we have access to WhatsApp and Instagram in South Africa. Our Facebook pages, however, are not updating or failing to load entirely.

Tonight’s service distruptions come just a few months after the previous issues in April, which plunged Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp into darkness for a few hours.

It’s not yet clear why Facebook’s services are facing outages, or when service will be restored.
