Google Chrome 76 rolls out with new install button, dark mode support

Google Chrome 76

Google’s Chrome 76 update began rolling out on Tuesday, along with an improved Incognito Mode that ensures your browsing really is private, and a number of other new features.

With the update, developers can now adjust thier websites to suit a user’s light or dark mode preference. Developers are now also able to control whether or not users are prompted to download their site’s web app via Chrome’s mobile pop-up.

“If your site meets the Progressive Web App installability criteria, Chrome will show an install button in the omnibox indicating to the user that your PWA can be installed,” the company noted. This means that users will now have a more direct avenue to install apps from websites when they are browsing.

For web apps themselves, Chrome will now check for updates daily (rather than every three days) to ensure that Progressive Web Apps always have the latest WebAPK’s installed.

Chrome 76 is currently rolling out to Windows, MacOS and Linux.
