New series on Showmax and Netflix

Sweetbitter on Showmax

Originally airing on Starz, Sweetbitter‘s been panned by critics on Rotten Tomatoes — an extremely apt sentence for a show that focuses on learning the ropes in the restaurant industry in New York.

Tess, your protagonist played by Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home For Perculiar Children), finds herself in the midst of drugs, drinking, sex, and good food. Still, the audience seems to love it.

It’s based on a novel of the same name by Stephanie Danler.

Sweetbitter debuts on Showmax on Thursday 1 August.

Kidding on Showmax

Jim Carrey (Dumb and Dumber) returns to the screen as Jeff, or Mr. Pickles, a child television show icon who grows increasingly dispondent after his son dies. You’ll get typical Carrey humour combined with typical Carrey gloom.

Kidding debuts on Showmax on Friday 9 August.

Project Blue Book on Showmax

This show can be summed up in one simple phrase: Aliens.jpg.

But for real: “College professor Dr J Allen Hynek is recruited by the US Air Force to investigate UFO encounters in the 1950s,” reads the show’s synopsis. Aiden “Littlefinger” Gillen stars, and the show’s produced by Robert Zemeckis (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy), in case you needed more motivation.

Project Blue Book debuts on Showmax on Thursday 1 August.

Dear White People S3 on Netflix

“As the students of Winchester embrace new creative challenges and romantic possibilities, a charismatic professor shakes up life on campus,” Netflix writes.

Dear White People stars Logan Browning (Bratz) and Brandon P Bell (Hollywood Heights), and will continue on Netflix on Friday 2 August.

Movies on Showmax and Netflix

Sextuplets on Netflix

“Father-to-be Alan is shocked to learn that he was born a sextuplet (all played by Marlon Wayans),” Netflix notes, and yes, you did read that correctly.

“With his newfound brother Russell riding shotgun, the duo sets out on a hilarious journey to reunite with their remaining long-lost siblings.”

Sextuplets will debut on Netflix on Friday 16 August.

Stroomop on Showmax

One of the standout local movies of 2018, Stroomop debuted in fourth place on the local box office back in August 2018. It tells the story of a troubled group of women “fighting against death to rediscover, forgive and accept themselves to find healing and friendship”.

Stroomop will debut on Showmax on Monday 12 August.

Dreamgirls on Netflix

One of the best musicals ever starring Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson, is coming to Netflix. Dreamgirls debuts on the streaming service on Thursday 1 August.

50 First Dates on Netflix

Sandler. Barrymore. Awkward plotline. Lots of laughs. The other classic romantic comedy starring these two comes to Netflix on Thursday 1 August.
