Windows 10 gets a new look on tablets and convertibles, latest Insider build suggests

Windows 10

Microsoft is testing a new user interface for Windows 10 on convertible laptops that will let users switch between tablet and desktop mode “without interruption”.

As part of the new Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18970, Windows 10 will now automatically adjust to suit a users position by simply collapsing the taskbar and increasing the spaces between icons when they are in tablet mode.

The company also noted that, in tablet mode, keyboards will automatically be triggered when you need to type, and that the File Explorer will switch to a “touch optimized layout”.

Beyond the UI changes, the Insider Build also offers users more options in “Reset Your PC”.

“Reset this PC now provides users a new choice to download Windows or use local reinstall. Previously, Reset this PC was only able to do a local reinstall and would build a new Windows installation from existing Windows files,” Microsoft explained.

The new features are currently rolling out to Windows Insiders running the latest 18970 build.

This isn’t the first major redesign being considered for Windows 10. In July, the firm accidentally pushed build 18947 to all Insider users, revealing a revised Start Menu.

In August, the company also announced fundamental changes that could be coming to the operating system, including a Cloud Recovery feature billed for inclusion in 2020.
