Nicholas Ninow, who last September was accused of raping a seven-year-old girl in a Dros restaurant, on Monday pleaded guilty to the crime, as well as possession of drugs and defeating the ends of justice.
Ninow appeared in the Gauteng High Court almost a year after the crimes were committed, and South Africans on social media remained as angry as they were back then.

After last week’s surge of gender-based violence protests around the country, many citizens are hoping Ninow’s case will make an example out of rapists.
“An example needs to be made with Nicholas Ninow’s trial. Promises were made to the women and children of SA last week, they better follow through,” one Twitter user wrote, using the hashtag #DrosRapist.

How the judiciary system handles Nicholas Ninow’s trial will show everyone whether South Africa cares about women. Promises were made last week. We were all there.

Considering the current climate in South Africa, Ninow’s case is indeed an opportunity for our government to prove that they are taking rape and gender-based violence in the country seriously.
