Google’s ‘Personal Safety’ app will detect car crashes, call 911 for you

Google Phone emergency call

A report by XDA Developers on Monday revealed that Google’s upcoming Pixel 4 smartphones will include a new “Personal Safety” app that can detect when users have been in a car accident.

The publication first spotted the change after Google updated its Emergency Information app for Pixel on the Play Store, changing the app’s name and outlining what it will feature in its next update.

“Pixel uses your device’s location, motion sensors and ambient audio to detect a car crash,” Google explains.

If a car crash is detected, the phone will vibrate, sound an alarm and ask the user if they need help. If the user does not respond, the phone will call 911.

Users can also cancel the alert, which will then trigger follow-up prompts asking about the nature of the incident.

XDA Developers further noted the update will allow users to share their emergency information with other contacts as well.

The news comes after Google first revealed an emergency call feature for Pixel users in the United States earlier this year.

Google is set to unveil the Pixel 4 on 15 October 2019.
