It’s finally time for Simba and the rest of The Lion King pride to say goodbye to the South African box office after charting for more than two months.
According to data from local movie distributor Filmfinity, The Lion King has finally made its way out of the Southern African movie charts after spending 12 weeks as one of the region’s most watched movies.

The biggest movie of all time in South Africa
The movie spent its last moments in the top ten this past week, bringing to an end an impressive life on circuit.
During its time on the chart, The Lion King became the highest grossing flick in South African history in August. It has since amassed more than R120-million at the local box office.
Internationally, it made $1.6-billion, placing it seventh on the all time biggest grossing movies list. It’s also the second biggest movie of 2019, sitting behind Avengers: Endgame.
While the all-CGI remake of the 1994 classic did have its critics, including us, there’s no doubt that it has become something of a legend itself.
Disney continues its chart domination
While The Lion King has now fallen off the chart, it has been replaced by another Disney flick.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil shot straight to the top of the charts last weekend, and remained there this past weekend. Thanks to its bonkers storyline, there’s no surprise there.
However, the current biggest grossing flick on the chart is not the Disney sequel, but a retelling of The Joker.
The movie, ranking second at present, has made R16.7-million over its two weeks on the chart.
