Katy Perry, Taylor Swift’s latest tiff spills over onto Spotify and Twitter

Taylor Swift has caused quite a stir after releasing her discography to Spotify years after claiming she never would — and just in time to coincide with the release of Katy Perry’s new album.

Swift has had beef with Spotify’s free tier in the past, claiming that musicians didn’t work hard just to give their music away for free. Her official fan Instagram claimed that this derision had been set aside to celebrate 1989‘s 10-million worldwide sales.

In celebration of 1989 selling over 10 Million Albums Worldwide and the RIAA’s 100 Million Song Certification announcement, Taylor wants to thank her fans by making her entire back catalog available to all streaming services tonight at midnight.

But it seems that her distaste for free streaming sites was not as strong as her distaste for Katy Perry.

Katy Perry and Taylor Swift’s feud has been ongoing since 2014

Swift and Perry have been going at it since 2014, when Perry allegedly stole Swift’s tour dancers for her California Dreams tour. Swift retaliated by releasing the single Bad Blood, saying that the move had made them “straight-up enemies.”

Two years after the release of Bad Blood, Perry released Swish Swish — a song about standing up to bullies that features Nicki Minaj, who has also had issues with Taylor Swift.

But when Perry’s album Witness debuted last night, it found itself competing against an unlikely competitor: Swift’s old music.

Unfortunately for Perry, it seems the sneaky move won. Taylor Swift trended on Twitter worldwide — and is still trending two spots ahead of Perry’s new music as of writing.

Critics have also not found favour with Witness. The Daily Beast called it “purposeless pop at its worst,” and so far it has only pulled in a score of 54 on Metacritic.

Naturally, Twitter weighed in on the petty drama.
