The Post

Steven Spielberg’s The Post stars Meryl Streep as Katharine Graham, the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and Tom Hanks as Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee as they race to catch up to The New York Times in unveiling pivotal Watergate documents.

Can you smell those Oscar noms?

The Post opens in South Africa 26 January 2018.

Fifty Shades Freed

This Fifty Shades Freed trailer is the epitome of “Plot, What Plot?” and, honestly, good for it for knowing what it is.

For one final show, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are teaming up to pretend they don’t completely hate each other while trying to bring depth to one-dimensional characters. There’s also some sex.

Fifty Shades Freed opens 9 Feburary 2018, but to tide you over, why not watch this incredibly awkward interview of the leads? It’s… something.

Game Night

Game Night is a comedy about a group of friends who, while partaking in an elaborate murder mystery game, find themselves embroiled in an actual kidnapping fiasco.

Starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, the trailer offers some actual laugh-out-loud moments and also a maltese poodle. Wins all round.

Game Night premieres in South Africa 2 March 2018.

The Crown

It’s time to bid farewell to this generation of actors on The Crown before older actors — including the likes of Olivia Colman — take over as Britain’s reigning monarchs.

“With the world undergoing great changes, a damaged British monarchy must confront its past in order to have a future,” reads the very dramatic synopsis.

The Crown‘s season two will be available on Netflix 8 December.

The Shape of Water

The final trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water does not hold back on the fish erotica, and it’s got YouTube’s comment section abuzz.

“50 Shapes of Water,” read one comment. “Woah ocean man,” another. Poignant, to say the least.

The Shape of Water opens 19 January 2018.

Dark

Stranger Things, but make it German.

Dark is a show about two kids in a small German town who go missing — but the question, the trailer mysteriously asks, is not by whom but by when.

That’s right. It’s time travel time!

The first season premieres on Netflix 1 December.

Hostiles

Starring Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, Hostiles is a period western about an army captain who agrees to escort a dying Native American war chief back to his tribal lands.

The film has so far received a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics finding fault in its “one-dimensional archetypes“, and others praising it as “a mournful, sorrowful, persistently powerful western“.

Hostiles doesn’t yet have an SA release.

Sherlock Gnomes

Are you ready to watch a film that works in an entire plot point just so it can use the line “No ship, Sherlock”? If so, you’re in for a treat.

Sherlock Gnomes is the follow-up to 2011’s Gnomeo and Juliet, and it’s all about a detective’s search for a host of missing gnomes.

The film features the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Ozzy Osbourne, and, unfortunately, Johnny Depp. It premieres 23 March 2018.

Coco

Here’s the final trailer for Disney Pixar’s Coco, about a young Miguel who finds himself in the Land of the Dead.

The visually stunning film is already winning the hearts of critics, and has so far achieved a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 23 reviews.
