Google Zeitgeist 2011: The world really loved Rebecca Black
Google has released its 2011 Zeitgeist, a look back at what was popular in search over the past year. This Zeitgeist marks Google’s 11th release, fitting.
“This year marks our 11th annual look back at the searches that compose the year’s Zeitgeist—the spirit of the time. With Zeitgeist, we look at the most popular and the fastest rising terms—the terms with the highest growth in 2011—in many categories across many countries around the world,” writes Google Fellow, Amit Singhal.
This year’s Zeitgeist site has been reworked with improved visualisation and a easy to navigate user-interface.
This is year, Rebecca Black was the most searched query online, shame on you world. Not surprisingly Steve Jobs, iPhone 5, and the iPad 2 made it to the top of the list.

Google search queries this year seemed to include not just the predictable, but the quirky too. Singhal explains:
“When looking at the data, it is fascinating to see the cultural fads and trends that took over the globe, from cupcakes (making top food lists in over a dozen countries) to the Dukan diet and high-profile weddings, but Google was used for much more than staying up to date on the sisters Middleton and Kardashian.”
When looking at different emerging market regions, the search queries in places like South Africa echo global trends with Steve Jobs, iPhone and Adele claiming three of the top 10 spots. China and Russia’s list featured the iPad 2, India featured Google + while Brazil featured Facebook.
Google has yet again outdone itself with the video this year.
