New Die Antwoord video looks set to repeat viral success [Video]
Fresh off making their new album Ten$ion available for download on iTunes, Die Antwoord have dropped a brand new video for the single “I Fink U Freeky”.
Since going live, the video has had upwards of 40 000 views and counting. Shot entirely in black and white, it features Ninja and Yolandi in a variety of gritty domestic scenes — including Yolandi flicking a cockroach out of a messily fried egg.
These household scenes are interspersed with flashes of Yolandi and Ninja dancing with fellow “Zef” characters, including a strongman, a boy with a trunk like nose, an albino, and an old man with missing teeth.
The video also features some trademark Die Antwoord elements, such as rats crawling over Yolandi and a distinct focus on the phallic.
As well as performing, Die Antwoord frontman Ninja co-directed the video with Roger Ballen. The photographer, who has over 50 years’ experience shooting in black and white, is renowned for his raw shots of unusual looking subjects in dilapidated surroundings and has been exhibited in galleries around the world.
Ballen believes that “Black and White is a very minimalist art form and unlike color photographs does not pretend to mimic the world in a manner similar to the way the human eye might perceive”.
A perfect fit for a group that managed to grab the world’s attention with a gritty, ultra violent flavour of rave-driven rap then.
