Google: Samsapple has nothing to do with Android
Looks like Google is doing its outright damnedest to distance itself from the recently ended Samsapple trial. The internet giant claims that “most” of the patents at issue in the trail have nothing to do with the core of Android.
Google’s implicit involvement in the trial stems from the fact that Samsung is the largest company to use its Android mobile operating system. The statement is non-committal and also points out that several of the patents that were subject to the trail are currently under review by the US patent office:
The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players — including newcomers — are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.
This is the first time Google has said anything about the trial. That’s hardly surprising as it was more than likely avoiding saying anything that could land it in hot water. After all it’s still fighting its own legal battles, most notably against Oracle.
It would nonetheless have been interesting to see what its statements would’ve been like had Samsung claimed victory.
