With Nelson Mandela gravely ill in hospital, people have rushed to pay tribute both online and offline to the liberation fighter turned president and statesman. One of the most moving tributes has seen people crafting Vine videos under the hashtag #hugforMandela.

The former South African president was rushed to hospital nearly a month ago for treatment on a recurring lung infection. The latest statement from the South African presidency suggests that Mandela’s condition is “critical but stable“. Many however fear that his age — Mandela’s 95th birthday is rapidly approaching — and severity of the condition means that he may not recover.
