Boeing Android smartphone to take off in late 2012

All the reports about Malware on Android got you paranoid about your phone’s security? Well there might be an answer, and it comes from an unlikely source: Boeing.

Yup, that’s right the company that builds planes, helicopters, and satellites is joining the smartphone party with a high security encrypted device.

According to National Defnese Magazine, the phone is near the end of its development cycle and is set to launch later this year.

Be warned though, the phone probably isn’t going to feature in the options list for your next upgrade.

Boeing says it is looking to drive the price down from the US$15 000- 20 000 you’d pay for similar devices from its competitors but not by much.

“We are going to drive down towards a lower price point, but…not mass-market price point,” said Brian Palma, vice president of the company’s secure infrastructure group.

“We believe that there is significant interest in the defense side as well as the intelligence side and in the commercial world as well,” he added.

The company says it looking to redress is a situation in which companies frequently have less impressive — and sometimes less secure — tech than their employees. It understands, however, that people want security on a platform they understand: hence Android.

No specs have been confirmed as of yet, but given the choice between paying for a super-secure Boeing Android and a chintzy Porsche BlackBerry, I know where my (at this point imaginary) money would go.
