Funbook Alpha — a nifty Indian tablet for US$89

It’s another cheap and cheerful tablet from India, this ones called the Funbook. It runs Android 4.0 and retails for Rs5999 or US$89. Is it worth snapping up for under a hundred clams? Let’s take a look shall we.

This crappy image is the best there is, for now

The Micromax Funbook Alpha is a 7-inch tablet which will “focus on education and feature a host of interactive study material, including sample papers for MBA, medical and engineering exams as well as tutorial videos.” Sounds like a snore. What else does it have to offer?

There’s a 1Ghz CPU with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal memory with the option of extending it up to 32GB with a microSD card. The screen’s resolution is 800×480, so nothing spectacular, though it is said to be able to play 1080p videos. The battery is a 2,800mAh item. Connectivity comes in the form of Wi-Fi and the USB 2.0 port means you can also use a 3G dongle. There is no mention of Bluetooth, though. Finishing off the package is a 0.3MP camera.

So for such a cheap option it has some pretty worthy credentials.
