Is Amazon launching in-house Kindle phone today? Sources say ‘yes’

It’s all but confirmed now. At the Amazon event in LA today, the company is expected to launch not only a new Kindle Fire but amazingly, a mobile phone as well.

That is, if the Verge has anything to say about it. “Multiple sources” have confirmed that Amazon will launch a mobile phone that runs a modified version of Android OS. The same ultra-nippy OS which powers the well-received Kindle Fire.

Not the phone, and not the OS. This is the current Amazon app store for Android. Behold.

There’s not much to go on. The new Kindle reader was leaked earlier this month with it’s interesting new technology dubbed “Paperwhite”. Paperwhite’s going to be the grown-up version of e-Ink. Brighter, easier to read, we know the drill.

Don’t expect too many surprises with the Kindle phone. We say, Android 4.0, a 4-inch screen and an experience that practically mirrors the Kindle Fire’s UI. Outside of that, maybe a few free eBooks and a back rub from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos?
