Dropbox app coming to Windows 8, competition for SkyDrive?
Dropbox will soon be making its way to Windows 8. The announcement made by VP of Engineering, Aditya Agarwal, at Le Web 2012 sees the client app waiting certification before it’s released to the Windows 8 app store.
The app is said to feature all new touch-centric user interfaces, fully integrating into the Windows 8 experience. The app is also available for all Windows 8 tablet devices, hopefully adding to the apps cross-platform appeal. It should be interesting to see how it fares against SkyDrive, Microsoft’s dedicated cloud storage client.
Both apps are available across the Windows OS lineup as well as Mac OS X. The one thing that Dropbox has going for it is its functionality for Android and iOS devices. However there is still no word on when it will be rolled out to WP8 devices. SkyDrive on the other hand, is not available on Android and iOS, but does offer WP8 compatibility.
For the user it will come down what OS’ there peripheral devices use. SkyDrive will only appeal to users that eat, sleep and breathe Microsoft. Whereas Dropbox will make more sense for a user that takes a pragmatic approach and uses a variety of devices. Either way, the array of choices for cloud-based storage apps should leave consumers with plenty of options to contemplate.
