Firefox’s Geeksphone Peak+ now available for pre-order at $200

Peak plus

Firefox’s first Geeksphone aimed at commercial markets is known as the Peak+ and has recently been made available for pre-order. This is an important step to further tap into crucial emerging markets.

We first got word of Firefox’s hardware venture in the mobile industry in May as it joined forces with Foxconn.

We noted how Mozilla, mostly known for its popular open source web browser Firefox, has started on developing budget smartphones running a mobile version of its OS.

The Peak+ has a 4.3-inch qHD display, 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU and 4GB of storage with a microSD expansion slot. It carries an 8MP rear and 2MP front camera and a 1800mAh battery.

You’ll also get access to a very welcome 25GB chunk of free cloud storage and the newest Firefox OS v1.1 which brings faster boot times and fewer bugs according to Engadget.

A Mozilla spokesperson later confirmed the following:

“Today, Geeksphone announced the pre-sale of a new device based on Boot to Gecko technology. We want to clarify that this new phone that was announced is based on Boot to Gecko technology with pre-release software, but is not a certified or supported Firefox OS device.”

The Geeksphone, as it’s known, was first made exclusively available to eager software developers but soon ran out of stock. The Alcatel One Touch Fire and the ZTE Open were to later follow-up to become the first commercial smartphones running Firefox’s mobile OS. These two models were aimed at emerging markets such as Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, and Asia.

You can pre-order from Europe to get it in September. If you’re aiming on supporting this new OS at a relatively cheap price of about US$200 (R1970) minus tax and shipping costs get on pre-ordering from this webpage.
