We’d definitely buy this 3D ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ game, if it was a game

Can Sonic the Hedgehog be put in the same “iconic character” category as the likes of Mario and Link? Well, we believe so, and so do these chaps it seems.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Paper Mario, a production team going by the name of pipocaVFX has made every gamer giddy with excitement. While Mario and Link have seen their respective series gain entertaining high-definition 3D remasterings and re-imaginings, SEGA‘s Sonic hasn’t really been that privileged.

The last Sonic game (Sonic Boom) if anyone dares to remember, was pretty damn terrible, but pipocaVFX’s dream of a 2D Sonic game with 3D fluffing could be an absolute cracker and bring the pixelated protagonist back into the present.

Note, it’s not an actual game or the beginnings of one, but it definitely shows the potential of other classic games’ environments rebuilt in a 3D world, keeping the 2D charm from classic consoles. Paper Alex Kidd, anyone?

Have a look at the awesome video below, and try not to get nostalgic (or throw your copy of Sonic Boom in the nearest fire).
