These locally available Chromebooks have Android apps
Chromebooks has received plenty of love internationally, becoming a viable alternative in many ways to Macbooks and Windows laptops.
In South Africa, our choices are far more limited though, as we discovered when we sniffed around for locally available Chromebooks. Nevertheless, you can definitely find a few models if you check out the likes of Takealot, Makro and WebAntics.
Takealot offers the Mecer Expression V2 Chromebook, being the cheapest Chromebook in South Africa by the looks of it (available for R2999 at the time of writing but usually R3499). Meanwhile, WebAntics and Makro offer a host of Acer Chromebooks.
These local devices offer Android app support
But the important question is whether these devices have Android app support via the Play Store. And Mecer’s device isn’t listed by Google as being compatible. We’ve contacted distributor Mustek for clarification and will update the article if/when they get back to us.
WebAntics and Makro currently stock the Chromebook 11 C731, Chromebook 14 CB3-431 and Chromebook 14 for Work CP5-471. Meanwhile, WebAntics also stocks the Chromebook CB-3 532, Chromebook R13 CB5-312T and Chromebook R11. And all these models are listed as having Android app support.
In an interesting side-note, Makro stocks the Asus Chromebox CN62, which has received Android app support too.
