Gearburn readers really don’t like the smartphone notch

Well, surprise surprise. According to a recent poll ran on Gearburn’s Facebook account, 62% of respondents don’t like the smartphone notch.

The notch has become a mainstay in smartphone design this year, this after the Essential Phone debuted with the design feature in 2017. Following on from its notably public interest, Apple then launched the iPhone X in September 2017.

This was seemingly the point of no return. Since, we’ve seen a slew of manufacturers adopt the notch, from Lenovo to LG, and OnePlus to Huawei.

But the likes of Oppo and Vivo are seemingly bypassing the notch entirely.

Two new devices: the Oppo Find X and the Vivo Nex both have novel camera mounting solutions, allowing both devices thinner forehead bezels. Xiaomi too through its Mi Mix 2S mounts the selfie camera on the lower bezel, giving the phone a pretty sleek end-to-end screen.

But hey, for now, the notch is here to stay. So let’s enjoy the odd little tech solution-cum-marketing gimmick while it’s here.
