Sony Xperia XZ3 unveiled with OLED screen, SD 845 and AI smarts
It’s been a little over three months since the Sony Xperia XZ2 launched in South Africa, but that hasn’t stopped the Japanese phone maker from unveiling yet another new flagship today.
At IFA 2018, the company lifted the curtains on its Sony Xperia XZ3 smartphone, sporting very few aesthetic and internal differences from its XZ2 predecessor.
With that said, you’ll still get a Snapdragon 845 chipset with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. However, the real difference is the screen.
The XZ3 sports an OLED panel instead of an LCD. It’s a 6.0 inch panel with 2880×1440 pixels coated in Gorilla Glass 5.
Said screen also features rounded corners — much like the Samsung Galaxy S9 — and tapers off slightly towards the flanks.
Overall, it’s a bit more attractive than the XZ2.
At the rear, Sony’s employing a 19MP snapper with f/2.0 aperture with both laser and phase detection autofocus. It also records 4K in HDR, and can snap 1080p at 960 frames per second for super-slow motion clips.
Beyond that, the battery is slightly larger too at 3300mAh and the phone will arrive with Android 9.0 Pie.
And the rabbit in its hat is its AI smarts.
Sony has added an HTC Edge Sense-like feature that brings up a smart contextual menu when the phone’s side is tapped twice. Said menu will change based on location and time of day.
And more still is the smart launch feature, which opens the camera app when the phone thinks you’re going to take a picture.
The XZ3 will be released globally in September, but there’s no word yet on pricing information for South African consumers.
