Zhao, the VP of Huawei’s consumer group for South Africa, highlighted that 2019 wasn’t without its challenges for Huawei, but it can still lay claim to some impressive numbers.

For one, the company has a volume share of 29% in South Africa, for both prepaid and contract devices. In terms of pre-paid alone, that market share stands at 40%.

Akhram Mohamed, Huawei CBG SA’s CTO, also revealed that its market share in South Africa grew from 9.2% in the first half of 2017 to 18.9% in the first half of 2019.

Mohamed also noted that the US ban did affect the company’s sales performance in South Africa, but only for about “three weeks”.

Globally, the company’s smartphone sales have increased by 24.4% between Q1-Q4 2019.

Zhao also shed some light on Huawei Mobile Services, the company’s budding ecosystem.

“Huawei Mobile Services now has more than 570-million monthly active users globally, including more than 15-million in Africa,” said Zhao.

The company’s Developer Day continues on Thursday.
