Meizu expands South African presence, what to expect?
Chinese firm Meizu isn’t quite as well-known as the likes of Huawei and Xiaomi, but it still produces some capable devices for the price.
Late last year, we saw Meizu smartphones come to the country via local distributor 2C Telecoms, bringing the M3 Note (review) and the Pro 6 (review) to our shores.
Now, it seems like the Chinese brand has opted to directly expand its presence in the country, opening a South African office, according to 2C Telecoms.
The answer came after Gearburn enquired about local availability of the Meizu Pro 7.
“The product road map has changed quite a bit and there have been some developments with the arrangement with regards to Meizu (sic) as HQ have officially opened an SA office,” a representative for 2C Telecoms told Gearburn.
Meizu is stepping up its presence in South Africa, opting to go direct, it would appear
In response to queries regarding the SA office, a “Meizu South Africa” representative said that they “envision great success for the brand in both awareness and sales of our devices within the local domestic market”.
Meizu smartphones are no stranger to the South African market though, even before 2C Telecoms got involved. The Meizu M2 Note was available from the now-shuttered Orange Store, bringing decent specs for roughly R3000.
The company has also revealed its latest flagship this week, in the form of the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus. The devices pack a rear-mounted mini AMOLED display, a 12MP dual-camera arrangement (similar to Huawei’s) and a MediaTek Helio X30 chipset.
