How does Skyrim perform on Switch?
Gamescom 2017 is in full swing and Bethesda and Nintendo have finally allowed gamers to try out the Nintendo Switch version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. So the big question is whether it’s actually too much for the system to handle…
Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry went hands-on with the action RPG for 15 minutes, noting that the game was running in handheld mode. The publication said that the game seems to run at native 720p in this mode.
“It’s the consistency in performance that’s really impressive, especially compared to the last-gen versions of the game. The wobbly frame-rates with hitching and stuttering during traversal and combat simply aren’t an issue on Switch: that 30 frames per second is as close to locked as you’re going to get,” Digital Foundry continued.
Skyrim on Nintendo Switch tentatively seems like a great port of Bethesda’s action RPG
The publication said it was unclear as to what extent Bethesda was harnessing the Special Edition’s features, but said the performance was “very much” like the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
There was one major concern though…
“…the handheld unit looked very much like retail Switch hardware, but it was connected via a meaty-looking cable harness leading into a closed box, and we’re told by Switch developers that debug units can run the full-fat GPU clocks in what otherwise looks like the handheld mode.”
