iPhone 8 is May 2018’s biggest selling smartphone worldwide
An iPhone is once again the best selling device globally through the month of May overtaking April’s best seller Samsung Galaxy S9+, research from Counterpoint suggests.
The iPhone 8 owned 2.4% of the global market share in the month, with marketing campaigns surrounding the World Cup hype reportedly paying off.
Notably, it outsold its larger brother — the iPhone 8 Plus — which itself is placed fifth and the iPhone X which placed third.
The Samsung Galaxy S9+ wasn’t far off the iPhone 8’s sales figures though. Counterpoint suggests the phone had a weaker month in Europe, but remained “steady in the US”.
Notably, Chinese giant Xiaomi had another excellent month with two phones in the top ten, largely thanks to its performance in India. The Xiaomi Redmi 5A was placed fifth — ahead of the iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy S9 — while the Redmi 5 was ninth.
Surprisingly, the Huawei P20 Lite is the only Huawei device on the list, falling some 0.7% short of sixth-placed Samsung Galaxy S9. However, Counterpoint adds that the three P20 phones occupy 2.6% of the global market.
Vivo and Oppo occupy the remaining spaces in eighth and tenth respectively.
