Marquez wins manic Misano GP: the motorsport roundup
This weekend saw a plethora of motorsport action from all disciplines. In a way, it’s fitting that it got everything out of the way before the Rugby World Cup. And if the latter is anything as exciting as some of the action we’ve seen this weekend, we’re in for quite a tournament.
We cover MotoGP, WRC, DTM, the V8 Supercars series and a few more we think you’ll know very well.
Without any further ado, here are the moments you might’ve missed in this weekend’s motorsport roundup.
1. MotoGP: Marquez wins changeable San Marino GP as Lorenzo tumbles
This weekend’s premier event.
When the Moto2 race ended, you probably would’ve been laughed at if you had said rain was predicted, because no one expected the weather at Misano to change so rapidly.
The MotoGP race got off to a dry start, with Lorenzo, Marquez and Rossi holding the first three places, but around six laps in, the heaven’s opened. But that wasn’t all. Rossi spent a majority of the race on wet tyres on a drying track with Lorenzo following. But when the Italian finally pitted, Lorenzo had fallen a lap earlier.
Rossi eventually finished fifth while Marquez, beating the Yamahas on pure guts and strategy, won.
2. WRC: Ogier wins in Australia, claims third World title
Sebastien Ogier won his third WRC Championship title with a win Down Under.
3. DTM: Glock wins Oschersleben race one, Blomqvist race two
While Timo Glock won race one, its was BMW rookie Tom Blomqvist who impressed, taking race two by over seven seconds. He’s the tenth different winner from 14 races this season, which makes DTM one of the world’s most open racing series.
4. V8 Supercars: Prodrive thrashes Sandown field before Bathurst
In the first of the three EuduroCup races, the Prodrive Fords took a one-two at Sandown — the precursor to the famous Bathurst 1000.
5. WTCC: Lopez, Monteiro take very different race victories at Motegi
Honda finally scored a win and a home win at that, when Tiago Monteiro brought home his Civic ahead of the pack in race two. Race one saw Pechito Lopez do his usual thing, and lead home his Citroen teammates squabbling for minor positions behind.
6. F1: Albert Park extends hosting contract to 2023
The organisers of the season opening Melbourne GP have announced that they’ve extended the contract to host the race to 2023, which means at least one (fairly) classic track on the calendar will be a part of Formula 1’s new decade.
7. NASCAR Sprint Cup: Kenseth wins, Chase field decided
Matt Kenseth dominated at Richmond, while the final Chase places were decided. Kyle Busch finished second while Joey Logano rounded up the podium.
