Marc Marquez reignites the MotoGP Championship race: the motorsport roundup

Well it wasn’t a blockbuster motorsport weekend, unless you’re extremely into your motorcycles (and not Jeremy Clarkson.)

Some riders were calling the Australian GP this weekend one of the greatest MotoGP races of the modern era. Of course, we could probably say that about the Qatar World Superbikes event as well, especially if you’re a Kawasaki fan.

Moreover, we take a look at the latest round in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, which has practically everyone in the stock car fraternity hooks.

1. MotoGP: Marquez blitzes Lorenzo to win at Philip Island

Incredibly, Marc Marquez has taken his 50th victory in MotoGP, and has set the Championship duel alight once again. Jorge Lorenzo was leading up until the final lap, but Marquez stuffed his generally faster Honda up the inside of the 12th corner, to lead across the line.

It was a simply brilliant move.

Andrea Iannone did the same to compatriot Valentino Rossi, to relegate the Yamaha rider to fourth for the first time this season. He’s finished on the podium for every race until Philip Island.

Ultimately, with two rounds remaining, Lorenzo now trails Rossi by just 11 points in the Riders’ Championship.

Honestly, this could easily be the most impressive MotoGP season we’ve seen in a very long time.

2. MotoGP: Iannone inadvertently kills seagull, Facebook tribute page emerges

In other news, Andrea Iannone was actually leading the field at the start of the second lap, but rather unfortunately struck a seagull. Needless to say really, the internet saw the unfortunately funny side of the incident and has set up a Facebook tribute account.

Seriously, have a look at it here.

3. World Superbikes: Rea and Sykes have duel in the desert

It has been Kawasaki and Jonathan Rea all season long, but unfortunately, the Northern Irishman missed out on the all time WSBK season points record after his machine suffered a rare technical error in the final race in Qatar.

In race one, Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea had a brilliant bout heading into the closing laps, but both were passed by a fast charging Jordi Torres. The Spaniard won the race emphatically.

4. NASCAR Sprint Cup: Joey Logano wins in Kansas

You’ll have a very different opinion of the final laps at Kansas this weekend if you’re a Joey or Matt fan. And I’m not talking about Friends either. Fast charging Logano shrugged off a late Matt Kenseth block to win in Kansas, but it also sent Kenseth off the track.

When asked about the move, Logano didn’t see anything wrong with it:

“That’s good, hard racing. We were racing each other really hard. I felt like I got fenced twice. He raced me hard, so I raced him back.”

Let us know what you think of the move in the comments section below.
