Audi, Volvo models will soon run a full version of Android

We’ve already seen Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto power in-car infotainment systems. But what about a smartphone platform powering the car itself?

Well, Google has announced that Audi and Volvo will be developing cars with a full fledged version of Android built in.

“That means your car’s built-in infotainment system could allow you to control your air conditioning, sunroof, and windows, find the nearest restaurant with Google Maps, listen to Spotify or NPR, or just ask your Google Assistant for help — even when you leave your phone behind,” Google wrote on its blog.

Google will be previewing the platform at its I/O conference this week, the company added.

Meanwhile, Volvo expanded on the announcement, saying the platform would launch on new Volvo models within two years.

“The large catalogue of popular Android apps — developed by Google, Volvo, or third party app developers — will offer connected and predictive services in and around the car.”
