ICYMI: A South African won a GP3 race last weekend
Between Kelvin van der Linde and David Perel, the last few months have been pretty kind to South Africans involved in international motorsport championships. The past weekend saw yet another South African do well in the form of Raoul Hyman, in the GP3 Series.
The series is no joke either, being one of the most competitive championships around. It’s also one of the final stepping stones to Formula One, with the likes of Valtteri Bottas, Daniil Kvyat and Esteban Ocon all being GP3 champions before graduating to the top flight.
So colour us impressed when Hyman crossed the line to win race two at the Red Bull Ring last weekend.
Thanks to finishing eighth in race one, the South African started from pole in race two — GP3 sees the top eight in the first race starting in reverse order for race number two.
But Hyman managed to keep the lead from lights out to chequered flag, finishing ahead of Giuliano Alesi and Nirei Fukuzumi.
The win means that Hyman is now sixth in the 2017 GP3 standings. Check out the full (albeit unofficial) replay below.
