Volvo XC40 T3 is now available in South Africa

Volvo’s baby SUV, the XC40, is set to receive a new powertrain option for South African buyers.

The XC40 T3 spec sports the a three-cylinder 1.5-litre direct injection petrol engine found in the likes of the V40.

It produces 115kW of power and 265N.m. of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. There are also plans to bring an eight-speed box and an automatic model into the country at a later date.

The T3 props up the XC40 range in South Africa, starting at R486 000 for the Manual Momentum spec, and rising to R525 300 for the Manual R-Design model.

Overall, the small SUV tops out at R644 100 for the T5 Geartronic AWD R-Design spec.

However, the model’s local lineup is set to grow even further.

The Swedish automaker confirmed that it is developing a “pure electric powertrain” variant of the XC40, which will be the company’s first all-electric car. It’s not yet clear if that model will also be heading to South Africa.
