Kia has composed a Sonet for you
Kia has introduced a new compact crossover to the local market. For those buyers drawn by Kia’s daring design language and quality cabin infotainment, but on a budget, the Sonet brings a crossover vehicle within reach.
Like all Kias, it has a strong design with that shapely brand-identifying grille and neat proportions. The cabin architecture is relatively spacious, despite the Sonet’s small overall dimensions, with a 392-litre luggage area in the rear.
For the moment, there is only one engine option available, Kia’s 1.5-litre petrol. This engine is not turbocharged, producing 85kW and 144Nm. It drives the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, although drivers who prefer the convenience of only having to manage two pedals can opt for the continuously variable transmission.
Kia’s Sonet range features two trim levels: LX and EX. The former might roll 15-inch steel wheels, but it does have a reasonably generous overall specification.
An eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto convergence, is standard. As are the dual front airbags and automatic headlights.
Electronic stability control and brake force distribution are also factory fitted on all Sonets. Meanwhile, nervous drivers will benefit from the presence of a reversing camera to assist in those challenging parking scenarios.
The Sonet EX ups wheel size to 16-inches, and swaps the steel structure for alloy. It also has leather trim on the steering wheel and transmission shifter. Rear parking sensors make it even easier to navigate in tight spaces and front fog lamps will guide you safely through the worst winter weather conditions.
Although the Sonet is targeted at urban buyers who prefer the elevated driving position and more commanding view of their surroundings, it does have 205mm of ground clearance.
It’s not an off-road exploration vehicle, in any sense, but you could cruise on some Karoo gravel roads with ease.
