How well are HMD’s Nokia smartphones selling in South Africa?
News that Nokia smartphones would be brought back by Finnish company HMD Global was greeted cautiously. After all, there’s more to Nokia than just a solid design and attractive price.
But the Nokia 3, 5 and 6 seemed to deliver pleasant designs, attractive prices and solid specs overall. Now, with the flagship Nokia 8 revealed, we wondered just how well the current phones are selling…
“Sales for Nokia 3, 5 and 6 have been encouraging despite global supply constraints,” Bridget Benghu, senior marketing/communications manager at MTN, told Gearburn, without giving specific details.
Meanwhile, Vodacom was cagey about sharing figures.
HMD’s Nokia smartphones seem to be off to an “encouraging” start in South Africa
“We have launched the Nokia 3 and 5 but can’t share numbers at this stage. The Nokia 8 will launch in September and this will be exclusive to Vodacom,” a marketing representative said.
Cellucity marketing manager Gavin Geldenhuys also elaborated on sales of Nokia Android devices, saying that the retailer “probably moved over 70%” of its stock.
“We knew it was going to do well, to be honest…” the Cellucity representative continued, adding that the Nokia brand still has “equity”.
We’ve contacted Cell C and will update the article when we receive a response. Meanwhile, Telkom’s website doesn’t show Nokia smartphones — we’ve contacted the network for clarification.
