Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Compact get full HD super slow-mo, but…

Sony used MWC 2018 to announce their Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact flagships earlier this week, packing top-end Snapdragon 845 chips, tall 18:9 HDR displays and slick designs.

The new phones also deliver slightly upgraded super slow-mo capabilities. The feature, first seen in the Xperia XZ Premium, still tops out at 960fps, but Sony has upped the maximum resolution to 1080p instead of 720p.

However, this upgrade does come at the cost of slow-mo recording time, giving you three seconds of slow-mo playback instead of five or six seconds. Users can however dial the resolution down to 720p if they’d like more playback time.

By comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy S9 offers 960fps at 720p, offering the same playback time.

It does seem like an odd route to take by Sony though. Granted, the 720p resolution wasn’t excellent, but recording time limitations were the bigger issue, we found in our review.

As for other general camera features, we’ve got the same 19MP main camera (now with 4K HDR recording) and a 5MP selfie camera.

Otherwise, the phones pack a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner (instead of on the side), 4GB (Compact) or 6GB RAM, 64GB of expandable storage,  a 2870mAh battery in the Compact, a 3180mAh battery in the XZ2, wireless charging and an IP68 water/dust resistance rating.

It’s also got Hi-Res Audio support, in case you want to listen to some great quality music via the headphone j- oh yes, the phone doesn’t have a headphone jack.
