International rugby stars who tweet
With more and more professional sports stars turning to Twitter to interact with their fans, we’ve decided to create a comprehensive list of international rugby players for you to follow. There are literally hundreds of players out there with accounts so we’ve narrowed the list down by selecting those with the largest number of followers and most active accounts.
Twitter has become such an important part of public life that players’ often find their tweets quoted in the press. Confidential information like team lineups and strategies are often revealed on Twitter. English club rugby side Leicester players have, for example, been banned from using Twitter in any capacity after player Jordan Crane revealed he could be out of the squad for three months due to injury.
Yet even indirect tweets can get players in trouble. Quade Cooper’s girlfriend and pro swimmer, Stephanie Rice, made a controversial tweet after South Africa lost to the Wallabies. Not only did her sponsors withdraw, but the press also turned against both her and Cooper illustrating just how large an impact Twitter now has on the mainstream media. Ex-Springbok player and commentator Bob Skinstad recently told Memeburn how he ended up in a compromised position due to “tweeting after mixing alcohol and sleeping pills”.
