Facebook music feature leaked in accidental tweet

A feature of Facebook’s much-anticipated music-based service has been revealed thanks to a tweet from a high level employee.

The social network has been tight-lipped about the product since it was announced and is due to officially launch it at its F8 conference, which kicks off on Thursday.

It has been known for some time that the service is on its way, but exactly what it will do remains a mystery. This now deleted tweet is one the first insights to the service. Techcrunch reports that Ji Lee, creative director at Facebook tweeted:

“The ‘Listen with your friend’ feature in ticker is blowing my mind. Listen to what your friends are listening. LIVE.”

Twitter user, Mitchell Holder, managed grab a screenshot the tweet before it was deleted by Lee.

According to Techcrunch: “Not only will all music you’re listening to appear in the just-launched right-side ticker, there will be a link to ‘Listen with your friend’, that when clicked, will allow you to listen along to the same song at the same time (thanks to the magic of scrobbling and track matching).”

The product is clearly live on Lee’s Facebook page. Earlier in the day he also posted a music related update on his Facebook page:

“Ji Lee is listening to Black & Blue by Mike Snow and feeling happy it’s another beautiful sunny day in California.”

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will introduce Facebook Music to the world during the “read, watch and listen” theme at the F8 conference on 22 September. He will also unveil changes to the “Like” button, allowing developers to create their own verbs such as “Want”, “Desire” or “Need”. The new “ticker” stream, which is specific to the music and film services, will be introduced alongside partnerships with major media companies.

The conference comes just days after Google dropped the need for an invitation to join the internet giant’s challenge to Facebook, Google+.
