My, Google, how you have grown [Infographic]

Google is one of the largest companies in the world, not just online but offline as well. The internet titan has come a long way since it started as a research project way back in 1996. When Larry Page and Sergey Brin met, I wonder if they could have dreamed that their little college project would become one of the web’s most formidable companies?

Following Page and Brin’s humble beginnings as PhD candidates at Standford University, back when only 36-million people were online, this interactive infographic tracks Google’s growth. Out of a web crawler named BackRub, Google was born. By 1998, the pair was working out of garage with US$100 000 from their very first investor — Google Inc. emerges, blinking into the bright glare of cyberspace.

The turn of the century was good for Google, and the world began to see it as bonafide search giant. One-billion index pages, two Webby awards, more than 20 languages and a climbing net worth later, Google was on fire.

The infographic, created by PhD advisory site, Online PhD, presents an indepth look at the Google that was and is.
