75 examples of people doing great things with mobile
We live in a mobile world. Our smartphones and tablets have become surrogate limbs, ushering in the post-PC era. A part of that is down to the increasing desire of such devices but an even bigger part is down to how readily they allow us to access the internet, matching — and in some cases surpassing — the PC experience. It’s hardly surprising therefore that the most recent report from “Queen of the internet” Mary Meeker suggests that mobile accounts for 10% of all web traffic and that 1.1-billion people now have access to 3G connections.
That number is only going to grow and anyone doing truly innovative things in the space is onto a good wicket. If you’re trying to figure out who those people are, the Meffys probably aren’t the worst place to start.
Judged by an international panel of over 30 journalists, academics, analysts and VCs, the awards claims to be a “global benchmark for measuring success and rewarding innovation in content and commerce”.
MEF, the Global Community for Mobile Content and Commerce has revealed the finalists for the ninth annual Meffys Awards. With more entries than ever before in 13 categories, from over 35 countries across all five continents, the 2012 Meffys mark the breadth, scale, maturity and continued innovation of the mobile industry.
This year, the awards organisers claim, it received a record level of interest from 35 countries, with 25% coming from start-ups. Amongst this year’s finalists are entrants in six new categories including Consumer Trust and Social Responsibility & Development Awards. This apparently reflects MEF’s focus for 2012 in “supporting growth markets and mobile privacy and security”. Other new categories include Publisher on Mobile, Life Tools App, Discovery and Engagement and Social Entertainment App.
The winners of the 2012 Meffys will be announced on 12 September 2012 at the prestigious Park Lane Hotel in Mayfair at the annual Meffys Gala Awards Dinner.
