If you’ve ever typed the words “epic” and “drummer” into your YouTube search bar, chances are you’ve come across Cobus Potgieter. Now Potgieter, a viable claimant to the title of YouTube’s most watched drummer with 129-million views, has formed a YouTube super group.

Potgieter chose his fellow musicians — BJ Bryant (guitar) Evan Collins (bass guitar), Bear Rose (guitar) and Justin Hicks (vocals) (all from the US) — after receiving 450 auditions, solicited exclusively through YouTube.

The band will begin recording its début album on 15 February, having raised the funds to do so through crowdfunding site Kickstarter, with US$52 000 pledged by and received from 650 supporters.

“There is a very cool buzz around the project. It has been a very long time coming and it seems like the followers and supporters of this project are just as excited as I am to finally see it come to life,” says Potgieter.

The drummer says that the band will keep supporters up to date on the success of the project through weekly webisodes a live studio cam, social media (Facebook & Twitter), the project’s website and a weekly email update, written by Cobus.

“It’s all systems go in terms of communications. Supporters will know exactly what is happening during the recording process, and everything else up until launch day. We will also update all social media pages and channels regularly. More importantly, everything will be consolidated into my weekly ‘whatupdates’ that will be emailed to those who have signed up for this update through the project website,” says Potgieter.

Band members have reportedly already collaborating on the songs for the album, using the social media platforms.
