Admire the view from the tallest building in the world on Street View
No, Google is not content with mapping Everest, the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon — its got bigger plans. The tech company’s latest Street View collection is all about heights — specifically, the view of Dubai from the tallest manmade structure in the world.
The latest Street View collection includes interactive panoramas in and around the 828 meter tall Burj Khalifa, including some crazy shots from a window cleaning cart on the 73rd floor, the world’s tallest observation deck, the interior of the building and some shots of the Downtown Dubai development. According to Google, it’s the first time Street View has ever captured the view from (not of) a skyscraper.
The Google team captured the images in the collection over three days, using a trolley and the same type of backpack ‘Trekker’ cameras it has previously used to collect some 9500 panoramas of the trails and roads surrounding the Grand Canyon. But this time, they weren’t being carried through a meteor crater, they were being pulled out onto maintenance areas and the building’s top spire in 40mph winds.
If you’re debating a visit to the Burj Khalifa, the collection also features some shots of the walkway to the observation deck, the building’s swimming pool (which is the highest in the world and located on the 76th floor) and lets you see what the tourists get up to (hint: photographing some fountains and the skyline).
